Jena

Give Jena one full day plus one night: old town, Schiller's garden house and the optical museum on foot, then the Fuchsturm or Jenzig hill if the weather holds.

Jena is Thuringia's second city and its science town: 108,000 people, about a quarter of them students, and the birthplace of modern optics through Zeiss, Schott and Abbe. The compact old town fits in a day; the hills around it and the fast rail link to Weimar and Erfurt make it a good one- or two-night stop rather than a base for a whole week.

Get around

The centre is small enough to walk: Markt to Jena Paradies is about 800 m, 10 min. Jenaer Nahverkehr runs five tram lines and buses from about 04:00 to 01:00. A single ticket is €2.90 and a 24-hour ticket €7.40 (2026). The Deutschlandticket and the Thüringen-Ticket cover regional trains and local transport in the VMT network.

  • Greeting: Firm handshake with eye contact; 'Guten Tag' or 'Hallo'; avoid: Hugs with people you have just met

Scams and watch-outs

  • Jena is bypassed by most ICE trains since the Erfurt high-speed line opened: for long-distance trips you usually change in Erfurt, Halle or Leipzig.
  • The two stations, Jena Paradies and Jena West, are about 800 m apart — check which one your train uses before you book a hotel.
  • The Optical Museum has been closed for renovation; confirm it has reopened before you plan a visit.
  • Hills around the city mean steep, uneven paths to the Fuchsturm and Jenzig: wear shoes with grip, not sandals.

Jena is a low-risk city; the usual German city cautions apply. Watch for bicycles and trams in the centre, keep an eye on your bag at Jena Paradies and on crowded trams, and take normal care on the unlit hill paths after dark.
