Jelgava is a flat, walkable Zemgale town 41 km southwest of Riga, reached in about 45 minutes by train or bus for €2.50. Its one headline sight is Jelgava Palace, a Rastrelli baroque block on Pils Island, with the Academia Petrina museum, the Holy Trinity church tower and two river islands filling the rest of a half-day. Most travellers see it as a day trip from Riga; one night is enough if you want the ice sculpture festival in February or a slow morning on the Lielupe.
