Jayapura is Indonesia's easternmost provincial capital, a bay city of about 315,000 people with a Dutch colonial past and a WWII history. Sights are spread between the city, Abepura and Lake Sentani, so you need a driver or a lot of patience. Two nights covers the core; most travellers use it as a hub for flights deeper into Papua or a land crossing to Papua New Guinea.

Angkot minivans run fixed routes with the destination painted on the side, Rp6,000 per trip. Distances are long and traffic between the city and Abepura is heavy, so most visitors hire a car and driver by the day — hotels can arrange one, around Rp800,000 per day. Ride-hailing apps work in the centre but coverage thins out towards Sentani.

- Alcohol is limited and not always cold; do not plan nights around bars.
Jayapura is not a beach-holiday town and Papua carries a real security risk: check your government's travel advice, keep to daylight movement, use a known driver at night and treat the border area as a separate decision.
