Jay
Jay, New York
Half a day: walk the covered bridge, swim at the village green, then move on. Not a base.
Jay is a quiet Adirondack hamlet of 2,500 people on the East Branch of the Ausable River. Its single sight is an 1857 covered bridge (rebuilt as a footbridge in 2007) next to a swimming hole. Most travellers use it as a 30-minute stop between Lake Placid and Wilmington, or a lunch break on the way to Plattsburgh. One night is enough only if you want a cheap bed near the mountains.
