Jamshedpur is India's steel city, built and still largely run by Tata Steel, and the largest city in Jharkhand. There is no commercial airport, so you arrive by train at Tatanagar or by road from Ranchi or Kolkata. The sights are green and low-key — Jubilee Park, Dimna Lake, the Dalma hills — and the city works best as a one- or two-night break on a Jharkhand or Kolkata route, not as a destination on its own.

Get around
Auto-rickshaws run everywhere and stand at Tatanagar station around the clock; there is no prepaid booth, so agree the fare before you get in. Hired cars and minibuses are easy to arrange for a day. Distances are short: Bistupur to Sakchi is about 10 min, Bistupur to Dimna Lake about 30 min by car.
