Jalpan de Serra is a small Sierra Gorda town, about 9,000 people, in a UNESCO biosphere reserve, and the practical base for the five Franciscan missions that make up the region's UNESCO World Heritage listing. The compact centre is walkable in an hour; the reason to come is the mission circuit, the fort museum and the mountain roads beyond. Most travellers pass through in one night, or use it as a two-night stop between Querétaro and Xilitla.

Get around
The centre is flat and compact: walk it. For Tancama (about 15 min by taxi) or Tancoyol (about an hour out), take a taxi and agree a return or waiting price before you set off — there is no useful local bus for either.
