Jalpa de Cánovas
Go for one night, not a base: a 670-person Pueblo Mágico with a hacienda, a brick church and a ruined mill, all walkable in half a day.
Jalpa de Cánovas is one of Mexico's smallest Pueblos Mágicos, a former cattle hacienda town in Guanajuato's Bajío about 2.5 hours by bus and taxi from León. The sights are a hacienda museum, a neo-Gothic brick church and an abandoned 17th-century flour mill; the draw is quiet, not volume. One night covers it, two if you want the lake and eco-park.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- Very limited English; have your address and any requests written in Spanish.
- Restaurants keep short hours and close early; eat lunch before 15:00 or check ahead.
- The Molino de Harina is an unrestored ruin: collapsed roofs and rubble, no railings, no facilities.
- Bus service runs via Ciudad Manuel Doblado, not to the town gate; the last leg is a taxi.
- Summer rain can make the unpaved lanes and lake tracks muddy.
A small, quiet village; take the usual precautions — unlit rural lanes at night, uneven floors and rubble at the unrestored mill, and long gaps between buses if you miss the last one. Check current local guidance before you travel.
