Jalandhar is Punjab's third-largest city and its sports-goods and leather workshops, but it keeps almost nothing of its old Buddhist and Mughal past. Travellers come for Punjabi food, jutis and jewellery, and use it as a rail and road junction on the Amritsar–Delhi corridor. Two nights is the ceiling; most people do one.

Auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws cover the centre for short hops; agree the fare first or ask for the meter. City buses are cheap but slow and infrequent. App cabs exist but supply is thin outside Model Town and GT Road. For Nakodar or Kapurthala, hire a car with driver for the day.

Jalandhar is a normal Indian city for visitors: petty theft is rare, but heat, traffic and unagreed rickshaw fares are the real problems. Women travelling alone report stares rather than danger; dress modestly at temples and cover your head at gurdwaras.
