Jackson
Stay 2–3 nights in town for Grand Teton; add 2–3 more if you want Yellowstone, which is a 1.5–2 h drive north.
Jackson is a small town of about 10,000 at the south end of the Jackson Hole valley, 10–15 min from Grand Teton National Park and roughly 1.5–2 h from Yellowstone. Summer and ski season fill every bed and push room rates to resort levels; spring and fall are cheap but half the town closes. Base in town for walkable dining, or in Teton Village for ski-in access.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Altitude: the town sits near 1,900 m — expect breathlessness and headaches on day one; hydrate and take it easy.
- Summer weekends sell out weeks ahead and rates double; book before you book flights.
- Spring and fall: many hotels and restaurants close for the season — confirm yours is open.
- Wildlife on roads at dawn and dusk; keep 25 yards from bison and elk, 100 yards from bears.
- Winter driving over Teton Pass (WY-22) can close in storms.
Very safe for a US resort town; the real risks are altitude on arrival, winter road ice and wildlife on trails and roads. Keep your distance from bison, elk and bears, and carry bear spray outside town.
