Give Izumo one night, two if you add Iwami Ginzan: the shrine is a half day, the coast and museum fill the rest.
Izumo is a small San'in city built around Izumo Taisha, one of Japan's oldest shrines and the one people visit to pray for marriage. The shrine, the museum beside it and the Hinomisaki coast sit west of the station; the station area is plain but practical. Most travellers pair it with Matsue, 40 minutes east by train, and reach it by the Yakumo limited express from Okayama or by highway bus from Hiroshima.

Get around
Trains reach Izumo Taisha and Matsue; everything else is bus, taxi or a rental car. The Ichibata Taisha line runs from Kawato to Izumo Taisha-mae, and the Kita Matsue line links Dentetsu Izumo with Matsue Shinji-ko Onsen. Buses from the station serve the shrine, Hinomisaki and Tachikue Gorge, but run hourly at best: check the last return before you go.

Scams and watch-outs
- Buses to Hinomisaki and Tachikue are infrequent; a missed last bus means a taxi.
- Many shrine-area shops and some restaurants close by early evening.
- Cash still works better than cards in small soba shops and minshuku.
- October is Kamiarizuki: gods are said to gather at Izumo Taisha, so beds and trains fill.
Izumo is a quiet, low-crime city; the real risks are infrequent rural buses, dark unlit roads near the coast and summer heat. Keep cash, note the last bus, and carry a light at night.
