Iwakuni is a small castle town on the Nishiki River, built around the five-arched Kintai-kyo bridge and the samurai quarter behind it. The sights sit in one walkable cluster, so most travellers see it in half a day from Hiroshima or stop one night on the way west. A U.S. Marine Corps air station shares the city, which shapes the airport, the noise and some of the local mood.

Get around
The bridge, Kikko Park, the museums and the castle are one walking cluster; allow 4–5 hours with the cable car. Buses run from JR Iwakuni Station (about ¥240, 15 min) and from Shin-Iwakuni (about ¥280, 15 min) to the bridge area. Walking from JR Iwakuni Station takes about an hour and is longer than the cartoon map suggests. Local trains on the San'yō line and the all-stops Kodama at Shin-Iwakuni connect the region.

Scams and watch-outs
- The bridge area is a 15-min bus ride from JR Iwakuni Station, not a short walk: plan the bus both ways.
- Shin-Iwakuni is served only by Kodama services and sits far from the old town: check your connection before booking a hotel there.
- Aircraft noise from the Marine Corps air station is part of daily life; light sleepers should ask for a room away from the flight path.
- Cormorant fishing and the boat seats run only in summer and can sell out: book ahead if it is the reason for your trip.
- Some sights close one day a week (often Monday or Wednesday): check the day before you go.
Iwakuni is a quiet, low-risk town. The real issues are summer heat, the long walk between the station and the bridge, and late-night drinking around the base: keep to lit streets and take the bus or a taxi after dark.
