Ittoqqortoormiit
Go only if you have 3–4 days and a flight booked to CNP; it's a remote village, not a hub. One weekly flight from Iceland, no roads in or out.
Ittoqqortoormiit is one of the most remote settlements in Greenland, with about 400 people and the Northeast Greenland National Park as its neighbour. There are no roads to other towns, one flight a week from Iceland, and no services beyond a grocery store and a guesthouse. It rewards travellers who want isolation, Arctic wildlife and a genuine outpost experience, but it requires planning and patience.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake, quiet tone; avoid: Loud talk
- Visiting a home: Remove shoes; accept coffee; avoid: Refusing all food bluntly
- Silence: Allow pauses in conversation; avoid: Filling every gap
- Culture: Ask about Greenlandic words and life; avoid: Calling people Eskimo or treating Greenland as simply Denmark
- Nature: Leave no trace; avoid: Taking stones or bones from sites
Scams and watch-outs
- One flight per week to/from Iceland; weather cancellations are common.
- No roads to other settlements; every move is by helicopter or cruise ship.
- Polar bears can appear near the village; never walk alone outside the built-up area.
- Mobile coverage exists but is limited; roaming is expensive (Greenland is not in the EU).
- The nearest hospital is in Tasiilaq or Nuuk; medical evacuation is slow and costly.
Ittoqqortoormiit is safe in the village, but the Arctic environment is unforgiving. Polar bears are a real threat outside the built-up area; never walk alone without a guide. Medical facilities are minimal; travel insurance with evacuation cover is essential.
