Itajaí
Skip unless you have a specific reason (port tour, Oktoberfest side trip, or cheaper airport base). One day is enough: walk the centre, see the port and eat at the Mercado Público.
Itajaí is a working port city on the Santa Catarina coast, 15 km from Balneário Camboriú. It has a compact historic centre, a lively public market and a few beaches, but most travellers use it as a transport hub or a cheaper place to sleep while visiting the coast. One day or one night covers the essentials.

- Beach: Bring only a towel, cash and a copy of your ID; avoid: Leaving things unattended
Scams and watch-outs
- Port traffic can clog the centre on weekdays.
- Beaches are not the region's best; go to Balneário Camboriú or Bombinhas for swimming.
- Summer (Dec–Feb) brings heat and heavy rain.
Itajaí is generally safe in the centre and beach areas during the day. Avoid walking alone at night near the port or empty streets. Petty theft can occur on crowded buses.
