Itabuna
Skip Itabuna unless you have family or business in town: the cocoa history is interesting but the sights are thin. Use Ilhéus or Itacaré as your base instead.
Itabuna is a mid-sized inland city in southern Bahia, historically the centre of Brazil's cocoa boom. Today it's a working town with a few cultural sites, a shopping mall and a modest food scene. Most travellers pass through on BR-101 between Salvador and the south coast, but the nearby beach towns of Ilhéus, Itacaré and Porto Seguro offer far more for a holiday.
