Istalif
استالف
Half a day from Kabul: wander the pottery lanes, hike the valley, eat kebabs under trees. Not a base — one afternoon or a single night at the lodge.
Istalif is a hillside pottery village an hour north of Kabul, known for its blue-glazed ceramics, shade under walnut trees and views over the Shomali Plain. The main draw is a slow wander through the pottery street, a short hike up the river valley and a meal of tea and kebabs. Most travellers visit as a half-day trip from Kabul; the single lodge allows an overnight for those who want to hike further.

Scams and watch-outs
- Road conditions vary; check with your driver before setting out.
- The HydroLight Lodge may be closed or unreachable — confirm before planning an overnight.
- Pottery prices are low because supply exceeds demand; bargaining is expected but keep it friendly.
- No ATM or bank in the village; bring enough cash (AFN or USD) from Kabul.
Istalif itself is a quiet village, but the security situation in Afghanistan is volatile. Read your government's travel advice before any trip. The drive from Kabul passes through checkpoints; travel only in daylight with a known driver.
