Ise
伊勢市
Give Ise one full day and one night: Naikū at opening, Gekū the same afternoon, Meoto Iwa at sunrise if you sleep in Futaminoura.
Ise is a pilgrimage town built around Ise Jingū, the most important Shinto shrine complex in Japan. The two main shrines, Gekū and Naikū, sit 6 km apart and are free to enter; the inner sanctum stays behind fences, so the visit is about the cedar forest and the approach, not a building. Most travellers come from Nagoya or Kyoto by Kintetsu limited express, walk Oharai Machi, eat Ise udon and leave. One night turns a rushed half day into a calm one, and puts Meoto Iwa at sunrise within reach.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Naikū and Gekū are free to enter and open from early morning to around sunset; hours shift with the season, so check the shrine's official site before a dawn or evening visit.
- Photography is restricted in parts of the shrine grounds and near the inner fences; follow the posted signs.
- Oharai Machi is packed in the first weeks after New Year and on spring and autumn weekends; go before 10:00 or after 15:00.
- Many Oharai Machi shops close by late afternoon; last orders in the area are early.
- The Kintetsu Rail Pass covers local trains only; limited express seats cost a separate surcharge.
Ise is a small, low-crime pilgrimage town and feels safe day and night. The real risks are summer heat on the shrine forest walks, uneven stone steps, and the fact that most shops shut early: carry cash and don't count on a late dinner.
