Irvine
Give Irvine half a day for the Maritime Museum and harbour, then sleep in Ayr, Troon or Glasgow: the town itself is a 2–3 h stop, not a base.
Irvine is a Clyde coast commuter town and one of Scotland's postwar New Towns, 40 minutes by train from Glasgow. Its one substantial sight is the Scottish Maritime Museum at the harbour; the rest is a Victorian core, a river mouth and a lot of 1960s and 70s housing. Most travellers pass through on the Glasgow–Ayr line or use it as a cheap bed for Prestwick Airport, 10 minutes down the track.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Trains are the practical way in: the last departure from Glasgow Central is around 23:30, so a late night in the city means a taxi or a Glasgow bed.
- The harbour area is quiet and partly derelict after dark; the town centre is busier but not a nightlife destination.
- Several local venues and restaurants have closed or changed hands in recent years: check opening hours before you travel.
- Coastal weather changes fast; wind and rain off the Firth of Clyde are normal even in July.
Irvine is an ordinary Scottish commuter town and violent crime against visitors is rare. The realistic issues are rain and wind, dark winter afternoons, quiet streets around the harbour at night, and the usual UK city-centre drinking crowd on weekend evenings.
