Ironbridge
Give Ironbridge one full day and a night if you want Blists Hill plus the bridge; two nights if you want all ten museums. A car helps.
Ironbridge is a village of about 2,600 people on the River Severn in Shropshire, 8 km south of Telford, and the UNESCO-listed Ironbridge Gorge is where the Industrial Revolution is usually said to have started. The 1779 iron bridge over the Severn is free to walk across; the ten museums of the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust are the paid part, and they are spread along 3 km of valley. One day covers the bridge and Blists Hill; two days covers the rest without rushing.

Get around
The gorge is 3 km (1.9 mi) end to end and the museums sit in separate villages, so walking between all of them in one day is a long haul with steep lanes. A car is the practical option for Blists Hill, Coalport and Broseley. A gorge shuttle bus runs on Saturdays, Sundays and bank holiday Mondays in season, with limited links to Telford Central station; check the current timetable before you rely on it. Parking in Ironbridge is pay-and-display, with no free option in the village. The gorge is 1.9 mi (3 km) end to end and the museums sit in separate villages, so walking between all of them in one day is a long haul with steep lanes. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Museum opening days vary by site and season; several are closed on some weekdays outside school holidays — check each museum's page before travelling.
- The Tar Tunnel is not open to enter; tours have been sporadic and the tunnel is unsafe. Check before you plan around it.
- Buildwas Abbey is about a mile from the village along a road with no pavement; drive or take a taxi.
- Parking in Ironbridge is charged and fills on sunny weekends and event days.
- Some gorge lanes are steep and narrow with no pavement; wear shoes you can walk in and use a torch or phone light after dark.
Ironbridge is a low-crime village and the main risks are practical: steep unlit lanes, riverbank paths that flood after heavy rain, and traffic on the roads between the museums. Use 999 for emergencies and 111 for NHS advice.
