Iringa
Stop 1 night in Iringa on the Dar–Mbeya road, or 2 nights if you add Isimila and a Ruaha run: it is a break, not a destination.
Iringa sits at about 1,600 m on a bluff above the Little Ruaha River, a district capital and farm town on the Southern Highlands route between Dar es Salaam and Mbeya. It is the usual staging point for Ruaha National Park and a good place to break a long bus ride. The town itself needs a day: a rock viewpoint, a craft centre, a Stone Age site 15 km out, and a market. Two nights is the useful maximum unless you are heading into Ruaha.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 20–30 minutes end to end. Daladalas (minibuses) run the main road and out to Isimila; taxis are cheap for short hops and the usual way to reach Gangilonga or a river camp. Agree the fare before you get in. For Ruaha you need your own vehicle or an operator.

- ATMs: fees differ by bank and some charge a flat withdrawal fee — carry a backup card and some cash.
- Nights at 1,600 m are cold in Jun–Aug; bring a fleece even in the dry season.
Iringa is a calm highland town by day; the main risks are petty theft around Gangilonga Rock and the bus stand, unlit roads at night, and long-distance buses that arrive after dark — take a taxi from the stand to your bed.
