Ireland adventure itinerary: hikes, wildlife and outdoors

This route follows the parent country plan: Dublin first, then the west, then the south-west, flying home from Shannon or Cork. The parent plan has you take the train to Galway and collect a car there, so the driving starts on day 3. Distances below are driving distances; add 30–40% to the times on summer weekends and bank holidays (check).

Two nights in Dublin is the minimum for a jet-lagged arrival. Keep the first day flat and urban, then use the second for a half-day coastal walk at Howth or Bray before you pick up the car.

Match the bed to the activity, not to the town's reputation. In Dublin, stay within walking distance of the river so you are not paying for taxis; anything on a tram line works. In Galway, the centre is compact and loud at weekends, so ask for a room away from the street if you sleep early.

For the outdoors days, the useful bases are Doolin or Lahinch for the Cliffs and the Burren, Clifden or Letterfrack for Connemara, and Killarney or Dingle for the south-west. Book B&Bs and guesthouses directly where you can; small places hold rooms for direct enquiries in high season. Hostels with drying rooms are common on walking routes and worth the small premium in wet weather (check).

Timed-entry sites are the bookings that change your plan if you miss them: Book of Kells at Trinity, Kilmainham Gaol and Newgrange all run timed slots, and the parent country facts note that Kilmainham tours sell out days ahead in summer. Book those online before you leave home.

Everything else on this route — Aran Islands ferries, guided walks, bike hire, kayaking — is normally arranged a few days ahead outside July and August (check). Island boat trips are weather-dependent, so confirm the day before (check). Summer car hire in the west is worth booking early: automatic cars are limited and prices rise for late bookings (check).

Figures below are 2026 estimates for one person sharing a double room, in euro. Car costs are per vehicle, so split them. Fuel and tolls on this route are modest; parking in Dublin and Killarney is the annoying line item. Treat every number as a band to plan against, not a quote.

If you have 5 days, cut the south-west and do Dublin, Galway and Connemara only. If you have 12 days or more, add Donegal for wild cliffs and beaches, or Inishbofin for a quiet island night. Travelling without a car? Stay in Galway and Killarney and use buses, day tours and trains; you lose the small roads but keep the walking.

Travelling with children, swap the long mountain day for a shorter loop and a beach afternoon. On a honeymoon, keep the same route but drop one activity day and add a night in Dingle or West Cork.
