Irapuato
Give Irapuato one night, not a base: the centre is walkable in half a day, and the strawberry fair or a León/Bajío flight stop is the reason to come.
Irapuato is a working agricultural and manufacturing city of about 590,000 people in Guanajuato state, an hour from León's airport and 4.5 hours by bus from Mexico City. It calls itself the world capital of strawberries and holds a Strawberry Fair in March and a strawberry food festival in late October. The historic centre is small and walkable; most sights outside it need a taxi or ride-hailing app. Come for one night, a festival, or as a cheap stop between Guanajuato, San Miguel de Allende and León.
