Iquique
Give Iquique 2 nights: beach and seafood on day one, the Humberstone saltpetre ghost town on day two. Skip if you want colonial looks — Arica is prettier.
Iquique is a Pacific port in the Atacama's driest stretch, with a surf beach inside the city, a 19th-century saltpetre-boom centre and a duty-free zone. It is a working city, not a resort: come for warm water, cheap electronics and the UNESCO ghost town 50 km inland. Two nights covers it; three if you surf.

Get around
The centre and Cavancha are walkable in 15–25 min. Micros (city buses) run along the main streets and reach Zofri; shared taxis (colectivos) cost a few hundred pesos and private taxis more. For Humberstone you need a car, a tour or a taxi by the hour — there is no useful public bus.

Scams and watch-outs
- Playa Brava and Huayquique have strong currents and undertow: swim only where locals do, and never alone.
- Zofri has a per-person purchase limit (about US$1,000): check the current rule before buying electronics.
- The sun and dry air here are deceptive — UV is extreme even when it is cloudy; use high-factor sunscreen.
- Coastal fog (camanchaca) can sit over the city for days in winter; the beach is not a guaranteed sunny day outside summer.
- Keep bags zipped in the market and bus terminals; petty theft is the main risk, not violence.
Iquique is generally safe by Latin American city standards; the real risks are strong currents at Brava and Huayquique, extreme UV, and bag theft around the market and bus terminals. Use taxis at night in the Zofri area.
