Iqaluit
ᐃᖃᓗᐃᑦ
Go for 2–3 nights in Jul–Aug if you want Arctic tundra and Inuit art; skip Dec–Feb unless you are coming for dark skies and dog sledding.
Iqaluit is Nunavut's capital and the main air gateway to Baffin Island, with no road link to anywhere else. It is small enough to walk in a day, but the reason to come is the land and water around it: tundra hikes, boat trips to Thule sites, and winter dog sledding. Flights are the big cost, so most trips are short.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- No road connects Iqaluit to any other town: you arrive by air, or by sea when ice allows.
- Food and drink cost much more than in southern Canada; budget accordingly.
- Summer mosquitoes are heavy in July and August: bring repellent.
- Terrain outside town is rough with few trails and no roads; go with a local guide for anything beyond a short walk.
- Rental cars must be booked in advance; airport counters are not staffed unless a pickup is scheduled.
- Winter daylight is very short and January–February are the coldest, darkest months.
Iqaluit is a small, safe-feeling town, but the real risks are the cold, the dark and the land: winter temperatures drop below −30 °C (−22 °F), and outside town there are few trails and no roads. Tell someone your plan before any hike or snowmobile trip.Iqaluit is a small, safe-feeling town, but the real risks are the cold, the dark and the land: winter temperatures drop below −22 °F (−30 °C), and outside town there are few trails and no roads.
