Inveraray

Inveraray is a small planned town of about 580 people on the north shore of Loch Fyne, rebuilt 1772–1800 around Inveraray Castle, seat of the Dukes of Argyll. The town itself is a two-hour walk; the castle, the jail museum and the loch shore fill a day. Most visitors come by car or on the Citylink bus from Glasgow and stay one night before pushing west to Lochgilphead, Tarbert or Oban.

Get around
The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 15 minutes. A car or bike is needed for anything beyond it: Auchindrain, Crarae Garden, the Loch Fyne Oyster Bar and the Argyll coast. Citylink buses stop in the village and connect Glasgow, Lochgilphead, Tarbert and Oban.

Very safe. The real risks are single-track roads with passing places, wet weather on the hills and midges from June to August: take a midge head net if you plan to walk in the evening.
