International Falls
Skip unless you need the coldest city in the Lower 48 or a base for Voyageurs National Park: half a day for the museum and statue, or one night if crossing into Canada.
International Falls, nicknamed 'Frostbite Falls', is the coldest city in the contiguous US. It sits on the Rainy Lake border with Ontario and is the gateway to Voyageurs National Park. Most travellers pass through en route to Canada or the park; the town itself has a historical museum, a Smokey Bear statue and a Voyageur monument.

- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
