Innisfail
Give Innisfail one night as a stop between Cairns and Townsville: Art Deco main street, Chinese temple, then Paronella Park or Etty Bay.
Innisfail is a small sugar and banana town on the Bruce Highway, about 1.5 h south of Cairns, rebuilt in Art Deco style after a 1918 cyclone. Two half-day sights sit outside town (Paronella Park, Mamu canopy walkway) and the town itself is a 40-minute walk. It works as one night on a coastal drive, not as a base for a week.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Wet season runs roughly Nov–Apr: heavy rain, flooded creeks and cyclone warnings. Check road closures before driving.
- Crocodiles live in the Johnstone River and local creeks: do not swim or stand on the bank at dawn or dusk.
- Etty Bay is a stinger (jellyfish) area in the warmer months: swim between the flags at the surf club or not at all.
- Fuel and food options thin out south of town towards Tully; fill up in Innisfail.
- Many small businesses close on Sundays and public holidays.
Innisfail is a quiet country town and crime is not the main risk. Watch the weather (wet season and cyclones), the river (crocodiles) and the sea (stingers) instead.
