Injune
Stop for one night, not a base: fuel, a bed and the Carnarvon Highway north. Two nights only if you are staging into Carnarvon National Park.
Injune is a town of about 460 people on the Carnarvon Highway, 91 km north of Roma and the last fuel before the turnoff to Carnarvon National Park. There is one short main street, a visitor centre, a hotel, a roadhouse and a motor inn. Travellers use it as a fuel and sleep stop on the way north or south, not as a destination in itself.

Get around
You need a car. The town is small enough to walk end to end in about 10 minutes, but the highway, the national park turnoff and the Arcadia Valley are all outside town. Fuel up here before heading north; the next reliable fuel is a long way on.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Road trains use the A7 Carnarvon Highway: overtake only on long, clear straights and give them room.
- Fuel and food options are limited and can close early or on public holidays; carry water and a full tank.
- Mobile coverage outside town is patchy; download offline maps before you leave Roma.
- Summer heat and storms can close roads; check Queensland road conditions before driving north.
- Kangaroos and cattle on the road at dawn and dusk.
A quiet, low-crime country town; the real risks are the highway, long distances between fuel and phone signal, and summer heat.
