Ingonish
Base here 2 nights to walk Middle Head and the Cabot Trail's east side; skip it as a day trip from Baddeck (2 h each way).
Ingonish is five small settlements strung along the Cabot Trail at the northeast gate of Cape Breton Highlands National Park. It is a base, not a sight: you sleep here, then walk Middle Head, drive the coast to Cape Smokey and eat seafood within sight of the water. Two nights covers it; one night is enough if the weather turns.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; 'Bonjour' first in Québec; avoid: Assuming everyone speaks English
- Queues: Line up and wait your turn; avoid: Pushing in
- Apologising: 'Sorry' is politeness, not admission of fault; avoid: Loud confrontation
- Canada vs US: Treat Canada as its own country; avoid: Calling Canadians American
- Indigenous culture: Buy from Indigenous-owned businesses and ask before photos at ceremonies; avoid: Wearing headdresses as costume
Scams and watch-outs
- Cell coverage is patchy along the Cabot Trail; download offline maps before you drive.
- Moose and deer cross the road at dusk and dawn: slow down, especially between Ingonish and Chéticamp.
- Many restaurants and motels close from late October to May; check opening dates before booking a shoulder-season trip.
- Swimming is cold even in August; the surf at Ingonish Beach is stronger than it looks.
Very safe for a rural park gateway. The real risks are wildlife on the road at dusk, cold water, and fog or ice on the Cabot Trail: drive to conditions and tell someone your route where there is no signal.
