Indianapolis is the capital of Indiana and the state's largest city, sitting at the crossroads of Interstates 65, 69, 70 and 74. Downtown is compact and walkable, with the Canal Walk, Monument Circle, the Cultural Trail and a dense run of museums and sports venues. Most of the sprawl outside the centre needs a car. Two nights covers downtown and one big sight; three nights adds the Speedway and a day trip.

Get around
Downtown is walkable and the Cultural Trail links districts by bike or on foot. Outside the centre you need a car or rideshare. As of Jan 2026, IndyGo fares are $2.75 for unlimited 2-hour rides and a $6 daily cap; weekly passes cost $20. Route 8 runs downtown to the zoo, the Canal and the airport; the Red Line is the most frequent downtown route.
