Ikeshima
池島
Day-trip from Nagasaki for the abandoned mine ruins: ferries run 7 times daily, tours cost ¥3,170 and take 2 hours. Not worth an overnight.
Ikeshima is a small island off Nagasaki that was Japan's last open-pit coal mine, closing in 2001. Its population dropped from 10,000 to about 100, leaving a ghost town of buildings overtaken by nature. The only activity is a guided mine tour; there are no restaurants and one spartan lodging. Most visitors come for a half-day from Nagasaki.
