Ikeda
池田町
Half-day trip from Gifu or Ogaki for the onsen and a quiet rural walk; not a base. One night only if you stay at the onsen ryokan.
Ikeda is a small town in southern Gifu, best known for Ikeda Onsen, a sodium-bicarbonate hot spring that leaves skin noticeably smooth. The town itself is a quiet farming community with a few temples and river views. Most visitors come for a few hours of soaking and a meal, then leave. The onsen ryokan makes an overnight stop possible, but there is little else to fill a full day.

- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags

- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- The onsen closes at 22:00; last entry is earlier — check the official site.
- No convenience stores or late-night dining outside the onsen complex.
- Train services to Ogaki are infrequent; check the timetable before heading back.
Very safe. The main risk is missing the last train: check the timetable at Ikeda Station before you enter the onsen.
