Go for 2 nights if you hike or climb; skip as a day trip from Palm Springs unless you leave by 08:00 — the drive is 45–60 min each way.
Idyllwild is a mile-high village in the San Jacinto Mountains above Palm Springs, with granite climbing on Tahquitz and Suicide Rock and a trail network run by the national forest and state park. Get around
The village centre is compact and walkable; a car is needed for trailheads, most cabins and campsites, and there is no local bus. Fill the tank in Hemet or Banning before you climb, since fuel in the village is limited and priced higher than in the valley towns below.
