Ichinoseki is a small Tohoku city on the Tohoku Shinkansen, 30 min from Sendai and 3 h from Tokyo, and the practical gateway to two river gorges: Geibikei, with flat-bottomed boats through a limestone canyon, and Genbikei, where dango are sent across the water on a cable. The downtown around the station is compact and walkable, but the gorges sit 20–40 min out by train or bus, so most travellers use the city for one night rather than a long stay.

Get around
Downtown is walkable from the station. Bicycles can be rented at the lot left of the west exit (look for the Rentakun sign). The JR Ofunato Line reaches Geibikei and other rural stops; buses and taxis cover the rest. Genbikei is a short bus or taxi ride west of the centre.

Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings

- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Gorges are 20–40 min out of town: check the last return train or bus before you go.
- Geibikei boats do not run in bad weather; sailings vary by month.
- Some bars around the station are hostess bars: if you do not know the format, do not go in.
- Winter brings snow and ice on the hill paths and shrine stairs.
A quiet, low-crime city; the real risks are winter ice on shrine stairs and gorge paths, and unposted bar tabs around the station. Japan overall is one of the safest countries for travellers.
