Ichinomiya is a textile city of about 380,000 people halfway between Nagoya and Gifu, 9 minutes and ¥290 from Nagoya on the JR Tokaido line. Its draw is one shrine, one tower and a yarn trade that still runs through the side streets. Almost everything worth seeing sits within a short walk or bus ride of the two stations, so a half day to a full day covers it.

Get around
Two stations do the work: JR Owari-Ichinomiya and Meitetsu Ichinomiya, about 15 minutes apart on foot. Masumida Shrine and the yarn shops are walkable from Meitetsu Ichinomiya; 138 Tower Park needs a bus from the station. Local buses are sparse and stop early, so plan the tower as a daytime stop.

Scams and watch-outs
- Last trains to Nagoya run in the late evening; check the departure timetable for your date and keep a taxi as a fallback.
- Buses to 138 Tower Park are infrequent and finish early: check the return time before you go.
- The Tanabata festival in late July fills the streets and hotel rooms: book weeks ahead or stay in Nagoya.
- Many small yarn and textile shops take cash only and close on irregular weekdays.
A quiet, safe city by Japanese standards. The real risks are summer heat, sparse evening buses and cash-only small shops: carry some yen and check the last bus back from the tower.
