Ichikikushikino
いちき串木野
Go for one night between Kagoshima and Satsumasendai: tuna meals, a gold-mine shochu cellar, the Satsuma Students museum. Without a car, base at Kushikino station and use taxis.
Ichikikushikino is a small coastal city on the Kagoshima Main Line, about 40 minutes by train from Kagoshima. It has the largest deep-sea tuna fleet in Japan, a shochu distillery built inside a former gold mine, and the port from which 19 Satsuma students left for Britain in 1865. Sights are spread along the coast and buses are thin, so a car or a taxi day makes the difference. Most travellers see it in one night or as a half-day from Kagoshima.

Get around
The Kagoshima Main Line links Ichiki, Kamimura-Kakuenmae and Kushikino stations. City buses cost about ¥200 for adults. Taxis wait at Kushikino and Ichiki stations. Outside the centre, a car is the practical option: Kushikino IC and Ichiki IC are on the Minami-Kyushu expressway.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- June rain is extreme here: over 500 mm in the month is normal, so keep a wet-day plan.
- August to September is typhoon season; check forecasts before coastal drives.
- Buses do not cover the whole city and run infrequently: check times before you set out.
- Some sights are 5–10 km apart along the coast; walking between them is not realistic.
A quiet, low-crime small city. The real risks are June downpours, late-summer typhoons, thin bus service and unlit coastal roads at night: carry cash and check the last train.
