Give Hyuga one full day with a car: beaches and the Umagase coast in the morning, Mimitsu historic street in the afternoon. Without a car, base in Miyazaki and day-trip.
Hyuga is a small port city in northern Miyazaki, spread across three separate areas after mergers: the central town around Hyuga-shi Station, the mountain town of Togo, and the old port of Mimitsu in the south. Its pull is the Nippo Coast: ria coastline, the Umagase cliff path, and long white-sand surfing beaches. Sights are far apart and buses run about once an hour, so a car changes the trip completely.

Get around
Buses to the coast and to Mimitsu run roughly once an hour, so most visitors drive. Rental cars are available near Hyuga-shi Station and the tourist information centre can point you to the nearest office. The city also runs a discounted Tourist Taxi with fixed courses (1 h about ¥2,200, 2 h about ¥4,400, 3 h about ¥6,600). Bikes rent from the information centre at Hyuga-shi Station, about ¥100 for the first hour plus ¥50 per extra 30 min; fine for the town, not for Mimitsu, Togo or Umagase.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A small bow; a handshake if the other person offers; avoid: Hugs, back slaps, loud greetings
- Names: Family name plus -san; avoid: First names unless invited; adding -san to your own name
- Paying: Put money in the tray at the register; avoid: Tipping, or leaving loose cash for staff
- Trains: Queue at the floor marks, phone on silent, ask before reclining on the Shinkansen; avoid: Phone calls, eating on crowded commuter trains, blocking doors with bags
- Escalators: Stand on the side locals use — left in Tokyo, right in Osaka; stations now ask people to stand still on both; avoid: Stopping at the top or bottom
- Shoes: Off at the step-up entrance; toilet slippers only inside the toilet; avoid: Stepping on tatami in shoes or slippers
- Shrines: Rinse hands at the basin; bow twice, clap twice, bow once; avoid: Walking down the centre of the approach, which is for the deity
- Gifts: Offer and receive with both hands; bring a small omiyage for hosts; avoid: Sets of four; cash outside an envelope
Scams and watch-outs
- Several stations on the Nippo Main Line carry 'Hyuga' in the name but are not in Hyuga City: get off at Hyuga-shi.
- The path out to Umagase turns from paved to uneven stone with a railing; wear shoes with grip.
- The stairs down to the cave shrine at Omi Shrine are steep: no heels, no skirts.
- Isegahama and Okuragahama face open ocean with waves and riptides; swim only where a lifeguard is on duty in summer.
- Overseas cards fail at many Japanese ATMs: use post-office ATMs or a 7-Eleven, and carry cash.
- August and September bring typhoons; check forecasts before booking coastal days.
A quiet, low-crime small city; the real risks are coastal water, summer heat and typhoons, plus steep or uneven paths at Umagase and Omi Shrine. Carry cash: overseas cards fail at many ATMs.
