Hythe, Kent
Hythe
Give Hythe one full day and one night: canal walk, High Street, then the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway to Dungeness.
Hythe is a small Cinque Port town on the Kent coast, 20 minutes by road from Folkestone and about 1 h 40 min from London by car. It is not a sight-heavy stop: the draw is the Royal Military Canal, a short medieval High Street, the Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway and Port Lympne nearby. One night covers it; two nights if you want the railway and the wildlife park without rushing.

Get around
Hythe is walkable: High Street to the canal is about 5 minutes, canal to the seafront about 10. Buses (Stagecoach routes 10, 10A, 18 and others) link the town, Sandling station and Folkestone. The nearest station is Sandling, about 2 miles away, with roughly one Southeastern train an hour toward London Charing Cross and Dover Priory; buses to the town are infrequent, so a taxi or the walk is often easier. A car is the practical option for Port Lympne and Romney Marsh.

Sleep
- High Street and Red Lion Square
- Pubs, restaurants and boutique rooms on foot; best for one night without a car.
- Prince's Parade and the seafront
- Sea-facing hotels and the promenade; 5–10 min walk to the High Street.
- Seabrook and Sandling Road
- Quieter, cheaper, further out; a car or bus helps.
Language
English everywhere, with strong regional accents and vocabulary; Welsh and Gaelic appear on signs and in some communities but you will never need them. Visitors mostly trip over words, not accents.
- Useful words: 'loo' toilet, 'queue' line, 'lift' elevator, 'pavement' sidewalk, 'return' round-trip ticket, 'cheers' thanks.
- 'First floor' is one above the ground floor.
- Politeness is indirect: 'I'm not sure that's quite right' can mean 'that's wrong'.
Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake at first meeting; 'hi' and first names quickly; avoid: Cheek kisses with strangers
- Conversation: Weather is a safe opener; understatement and self-deprecating humour; avoid: Asking about salary or class
- Queues: Join at the back; avoid: Pushing onto buses or trains before others get off
- Apologies: 'Sorry' is said constantly, even when not at fault; avoid: Taking it as an admission of blame
- Pubs: Buy rounds in a group; wait at the bar without waving money; avoid: Clicking fingers at staff
- Nations: Call Scots Scottish and Welsh Welsh; avoid: Calling the whole UK 'England'
Scams and watch-outs
- Sandling station is about 2 miles from town with infrequent buses: plan the taxi or the walk before you arrive.
- Port Lympne day tickets are cheaper booked online than at the gate; check current prices and hours.
- The Romney Hythe & Dymchurch Railway runs a reduced timetable outside the main season: check daily timetables.
- Coastal weather changes fast; carry a light waterproof even in summer.
Hythe is a low-crime small town and safe to walk by day and early evening. The real risks are the unlit canal towpath after dark, fast traffic on the A259 and A20, and cold water and strong currents along the seafront: swim only where others do.
