Hvalvík
Skip as a base: Hvalvík is a 15-minute stop for its 1829 church and the Við Áir whaling museum, then drive on to Saksun or Tórshavn.
Hvalvík is a quiet village on Streymoy's east coast, home to the oldest wooden black church in the Faroe Islands (1829) and the Við Áir open-air whaling museum. Most travellers pass through in under an hour on the way to Saksun or the northern islands. The village itself has one pizza place and no accommodation worth planning around.
