Humpty Doo
Stop for lunch, fuel and the Big Boxing Crocodile on the way to Kakadu, or use it as a 30-min base for Fogg Dam; do not sleep here.
Humpty Doo is a small rural town on the Arnhem Highway, about 40 minutes from Darwin and on the road to Kakadu. It is a service stop, not a destination: a general store, a pub, a cafe and one of Australia's big things. Its real value is Fogg Dam, 10 minutes east, where the birdlife is the reason to come. There are no hotels, so you sleep in Darwin or Palmerston and pass through.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- No accommodation in town: plan to sleep in Darwin or Palmerston.
- Wet season (Nov–Apr) brings heat, humidity and possible road closures; check conditions before driving to Fogg Dam.
- Crocodiles are present in local waterways: do not swim or walk near the edges.
- Distances look short on the map but the town is smaller than it appears; do not overestimate what is here.
Low crime, but the real risks are the wet season, long drives with wildlife on the road at dusk, and crocodiles in local waterways: do not swim or stand at the water's edge.
