Huamantla
Go for one night, or two in August for the Feria: the colonial centre is a half-day, the puppet museum and bullring fill the rest.
Huamantla is a small colonial city in Tlaxcala, about 2 h 15 min by first-class bus from Mexico City's TAPO terminal, and a Pueblo Mágico. Its draw is the August Feria de Huamantla — the Night Nobody Sleeps sawdust carpets and the Huamantlada bull run — plus a compact centre of churches, a puppet museum and a bullfighting museum. Outside festival weeks it is a quiet one-night stop between Puebla and Tlaxcala, not a destination in itself.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake; a kiss on the right cheek among friends; avoid: Skipping 'buenos días' when entering a shop
- Punctuality: Be on time for tours and buses; avoid: Expecting social events to start on time
- Talking: Warm small talk, family, food, football; avoid: Jokes about cartels, the wall or migration
- Churches: Covered shoulders, quiet; avoid: Photos during mass
- Dining: Say 'provecho' to other diners when leaving; avoid: Rushing the waiter
Scams and watch-outs
- The Huamantlada bull run injures dozens and has caused deaths: watch from behind the barriers or a roof, never on the street.
- August Feria week sells out beds in Huamantla and Apizaco: book weeks ahead.
- Market food stalls vary in hygiene; stick to busy vendors and cooked food.
- La Malinche is a 4,462 m volcano: altitude sickness is real, start early and carry water.
Huamantla is a calm small city; the real risks are the Huamantlada bull run in August, altitude on La Malinche and unlit streets after dark outside the Centro. Use 911 for emergencies and 078 for tourist help.
