Give Hualien 2 nights: one full day for Taroko if it is open, one for the coast and night market. Skip it if your trip is Taipei-only.
Hualien is a small city of about 100,000 between the Pacific and the Central Mountain Range, and the gateway to Taroko Gorge. The city itself is a half-day of temples, a stone museum and the Dongdamen night market; the reason to come is the gorge and the coast road. Taroko has been partly closed since the 2024 earthquake and typhoons, so check access before you book.

Get around
The compact centre is walkable, but Hualien Station sits about 30 minutes on foot from the old town, so budget for taxis. Scooters rent for roughly NT$400 a day and are the practical way to reach the gorge and the coast; bring an IDP. Buses are limited outside the city; Hualien Bus 1133, Taroko Bus 302 and UBus 310 run toward Taroko from Xincheng station.

Etiquette
- Greeting: A nod or light handshake; 'nǐ hǎo'; avoid: Hugs with new acquaintances
- Handing things: Two hands for cards, gifts and money; avoid: Tossing money on the counter
- Gifts: Fruit or a boxed sweet for hosts; refuse once before accepting; avoid: Clocks, umbrellas, pears and anything in fours — they sound like death or parting
- MRT: Queue at the markings, give up priority seats; avoid: Eating, drinking or chewing gum past the gates
- Temples: Enter right, exit left; one or three sticks of incense; avoid: Stepping on thresholds; pointing at deities

Scams and watch-outs
- Taroko Gorge access has been restricted since the 2024 earthquake and later storms: check the official Taroko site and the highway authority before travelling.
- Qixingtan has steep drop-offs and strong currents: stay on the pebbles, do not swim.
- Typhoons hit Jul–Sep; flights and coastal trains are cancelled at short notice.
- Scooter rental to foreigners is not universal: ask before you plan your day around it.
- Trains from Taipei sell out on long weekends and holidays: book seats early.
Hualien is calm and low-crime; the real risks are typhoons, the steep shore at Qixingtan and mountain roads after rain. Check Taroko access before you commit a day to it.
