Huaihua
怀化
Huaihua is a transit hub for western Hunan, not a destination: one night to break a journey, or a day-trip for the old towns and Dong villages.
Huaihua is a prefecture-level city in the mountainous west of Hunan, historically the 'Gateway to Guizhou and Yunnan'. Its urban area has few sights, but the surrounding counties hold well-preserved Ming and Qing towns, Dong and Miao villages, and forest parks. Most travellers use it as a rail stop between Changsha, Guizhou and Chongqing, or as a base for day trips to Fenghuang and Tongdao.
