Give Hua Hin 3 nights if you want beach plus food; skip it if you want island water or a walkable old town — it has neither.
Hua Hin is a 6 km beach town 195 km south of Bangkok, built as a royal resort in the 1920s and now a weekend escape for Bangkok and a retirement base for foreigners. There is no real centre: Phetkasem Road splits the town, the clock tower is the de facto transport hub, and most visitors stay between Soi 61 and Khao Takiab. It suits families, couples and slow stays more than sightseeing.

Get around
Green songthaews run up and down Phetkasem Road about every 10 minutes for ฿10, from the fresh market in the centre south to Khao Takiab. Motorcycle taxis and tuk-tuks need a price agreed first; expect ฿100+ for any tuk-tuk hop as a foreigner. Grab works for cars and motorbikes. Motorbike rental ฿150–200 per day; the town is flat and bicycles are a reasonable option.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: A wai (palms together, slight bow) to return a greeting; a smile and nod for shop staff; avoid: Waiing children or service staff first — it confuses; hugging strangers
- Head and feet: Keep feet on the floor, sit with legs folded to the side in temples; avoid: Touching heads (even children's), pointing feet, stepping over people or food
- Temples: Covered shoulders and knees, shoes off, sit lower than monks; avoid: Women touching monks or handing them things directly; climbing Buddha images

Scams and watch-outs
- Phetkasem Road is a race track with few crossings: cross at the clock tower or a marked light, never mid-block.
- Sidewalks are blocked by signs and stalls; wheelchair and stroller access is poor.
- Sea water quality off central Hua Hin has been rated only fair, with bacteria above standard at times — check before swimming after heavy rain.
- The Pattaya ferry has been suspended since 2020; do not plan around it.
- Klai Kangwon Palace is a working royal residence and is not open for tours; only the outer grounds, 16:00–19:00, with sleeves and passport.
Hua Hin is calm by Thai resort standards; the real risks are Phetkasem Road traffic, blocked sidewalks, and unlicensed jet-ski or motorbike rentals with no posted prices — photograph the vehicle and agree the total before you ride.
