Hout Bay
Houtbaai
Base here 2 nights only if you have a car and want the harbour plus Chapman's Peak at your door; otherwise day-trip from Cape Town in 45–60 min.
Hout Bay is a harbour suburb on the west side of the Cape Peninsula, about 20 km from central Cape Town. It works as a quieter, car-dependent base for the peninsula and Chapman's Peak Drive, or as a half-day stop between Camps Bay and Cape Point. Without a car, its spread-out layout and thin evening transport make it a poor base.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights sit 2–6 km (1.2–3.7 mi) apart along the valley and harbour. Metered taxis and ride-hailing exist but are thin after about 21:00 — book a return trip. Minibus taxis run along Main Road to Cape Town and are cheap but not aimed at visitors. Chapman's Peak Drive is a toll road, open in good weather only.A car is the practical choice: sights sit 2–6 km (1.2–3.7 mi) apart along the valley and harbour. Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Say hello and ask how someone is before any request; avoid: Launching straight into a question
- Handshakes: Three-part African handshake with friends; a normal handshake with strangers; avoid: Refusing an offered hand
- Elders: Use Mr/Mrs or 'Mama', 'Baba' respectfully in townships and rural areas; avoid: First names with older people you have just met
- Braai invitations: Bring meat or drinks, and arrive on 'African time'; avoid: Taking over the fire
- Photos: Ask first, especially in townships and villages; avoid: Photographing children without a parent's permission
- Politics and race: Ask questions and listen; avoid: Lecturing on history or crime
Scams and watch-outs
- Chapman's Peak Drive closes in high wind or after rockfalls; check the toll operator's status before you commit to the drive.
- Do not leave anything visible in a parked car at the harbour or beach lots.
- Swimming at Hout Bay beach is cold (Atlantic, often 12–16°C) and the surf can be strong.
- Seal Island boats are weather-dependent; morning departures are the most reliable.
- Book beds well ahead for December–January; the village fills up.
Hout Bay is a mixed suburb: the harbour and Main Road are fine by day, but break-ins into parked cars and after-dark street robberies happen. Drive or ride-hail after dark, keep bags out of sight, and walk only in lit, busy stretches.
