Houston is a car city with a walkable core. The two days that work best keep each day inside one cluster: the Museum District and Hermann Park on one, Space Center Houston or the Heights on the other. Trying to cover both ends of the city in one day is where weekends get lost to traffic.

Prices and hours
Museum and attraction hours shift by season and by day of the week, and several Houston museums close one weekday. Check the official site for the day you plan before you build the day around it. Space Center Houston is the one to book in advance on a weekend; it is the most likely to sell out or run long queues.
Food is where Houston is cheapest relative to its size. A plate of Tex-Mex or a barbecue tray at a mid-range place is a normal lunch, and the city's Vietnamese, Indian and Nigerian restaurant scenes are strong value. Budget more for a sit-down dinner in Montrose or the Heights on Saturday night.

Getting there
Houston has two airports. George Bush Intercontinental (IAH) is the main long-haul gateway and sits north of the city; William P. Hobby (HOU) is closer to downtown and handles more domestic traffic. Both connect to the centre by rideshare, taxi or shuttle, and IAH is the longer transfer of the two. Allow extra time on Friday evenings.
Flight times from the usual origin countries are long-haul into IAH or via a US hub: from London roughly 10 hours nonstop, from Sydney or Auckland via a US or Pacific hub, from Toronto a few hours nonstop. Book the airport transfer before you land if you arrive late.
Once in the city, METRORail is the practical option for downtown, Midtown, the Museum District and the Texas Medical Center. Space Center Houston and the outer neighbourhoods are not on the rail network, so plan a car, rideshare or an organised tour for those.

Build the weekend around one cluster per day and accept that you will not see everything. Houston rewards a slower pace more than a checklist.
Summer afternoons are the enemy. If you travel June–August, put indoor museums in the middle of the day and walk in the early morning or evening. Hurricane season runs June–November with a Gulf peak August–October, so keep an eye on forecasts if you are in the city then.
Book Space Center Houston and any big museum online before the weekend. Walk-in tickets are usually available but the queue is the cost.
