Houston
Give Houston 3 nights with a car: the Museum District and Space Center need a full day each, and Downtown alone is a half-day.
Houston is the fifth-largest US metro area and one of the country's most diverse big cities, built on oil money and immigration. It is sprawling and car-dependent: almost everything worth seeing sits inside the I-610 Loop, between Downtown, the Galleria and the Texas Medical Center. Come October to April for the weather; summer heat and humidity are the real constraint on any itinerary.

Get around
A car is the default: Houston has almost no zoning and the metro area is built around freeways (I-610 Loop, Beltway 8, Grand Parkway). METRORail covers Downtown, Midtown, the Museum District and the Med Center; METRO buses fill gaps but run slowly. Rideshare and taxis work well for nights out. Walking is realistic only within individual districts, not between them.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat and humidity: heat indices commonly top 38 °C and can reach 46 °C; limit outdoor time between 10:00 and 19:00 and carry water.
- Sidewalks are patchy and privately built in places; potholes and drivers turning across crosswalks are common.
- Flooding: heavy rain can close freeways and underpasses within minutes. Do not drive into standing water.
- Hurricane season runs June–November; check forecasts before a Gulf Coast day trip.
- Distances deceive: two points on the map can be 45 minutes apart in traffic.
Violent crime is concentrated in specific areas and rarely touches visitors; the bigger risks are heat, flooding and traffic. Downtown, Montrose and the Museum District are fine on foot by day and busy at night.
