West Houston, Houston: neighborhood guide

West Houston is the west side of the city, built around the Katy Freeway (I-10) and the Sam Houston Tollway (Beltway 8), with Westchase, the Energy Corridor, CityCentre and the Mahatma Gandhi District among its named areas. It grew as suburban Houston from the 1940s to the 1970s and still reads that way: freeways, office towers, garden apartments, strip malls and parking lots.

The payoff is food and shopping. New Chinatown, also called Asiatown or Little Saigon, spreads along Bellaire Boulevard, with Vietnamese restaurants and shops making up most of the strip. The Mahatma Gandhi District runs along Harwin Drive between the Southwest Freeway and the Westpark Tollway, with Indian and Pakistani groceries, restaurants and import shops.

Westchase and the Energy Corridor hold the offices and the chain hotels. CityCentre, at I-10 and Beltway 8, is a walkable pocket of shops, restaurants, hotels and apartments, and Memorial City Mall adds department stores and an indoor ice rink. Southwest Houston, including Bellaire and Meyerland, is a separate area to the south and closer in.

Stay if you have a car, want a large room with easy parking, and plan to eat your way through Bellaire Boulevard and Harwin Drive. It also suits families and longer stays, and travellers visiting offices in the Energy Corridor or Westchase.

Do not stay if this is your first trip and you want to walk to museums, stadiums or bars. West Houston is not a sightseeing base; the Museum District, Downtown and Neartown are a drive away, and much longer by bus. If you are travelling without a car, base yourself in Downtown or Neartown instead.

Chain hotels here are often cheaper than the same brands Downtown, and parking is usually free rather than a nightly fee (check your hotel). The trade is time in traffic: I-10 and the Westpark Tollway clog at rush hour, and the toll roads need a transponder or a pay-by-plate account (check).

Bellaire Boulevard is the reason many people come. Vietnamese pho and banh mi, Chinese hot pot and dim sum, Korean barbecue and bakeries sit within a few kilometres. Hong Kong City Mall at 11205 Bellaire Blvd anchors the strip with a large Asian grocery and food court. Expect plain rooms and low prices; a bowl of pho is often under US$15 (2026 estimate, check).

On Harwin Drive, Indian and Pakistani restaurants serve biryani, chaat, kebabs and sweets, with groceries and spice shops next door. Westheimer near Kirkwood has Phoenicia Specialty Food Market, a large Middle Eastern market with a deli and bakery. For a Texas steak, Taste of Texas on the Katy Freeway is the long-standing local pick; book ahead and expect US$50–80 a head with drinks (2026 estimate, check).

CityCentre and Memorial City cover the mid-range and chain end: burgers, Tex-Mex, sushi, brunch. Most places are in strip centres with their own lots, so driving between two restaurants is normal.

A car is the practical answer. West Houston is built around the Katy Freeway (I-10), the Sam Houston Tollway (Beltway 8), the Westpark Tollway and the Southwest Freeway (US-59/I-69). Distances between the food districts are a short drive and a long walk.

Rideshare works well for evenings when you plan to drink; a trip from a Westchase hotel to a Bellaire Boulevard restaurant is typically US$10–18 (2026 estimate, check). METRO buses run along Westheimer and Bellaire but are slow and infrequent by big-city standards; check the current routes and times before relying on them.

From the airports, IAH is roughly 35–50 minutes and HOU roughly 30–45 minutes by car outside rush hour (check). Add 20–30 minutes in peak traffic. Private aircraft can use West Houston Airport (IWS).
