Hotchkiss
One night, car required: base here for West Elks wineries and the North Fork Valley, not as a stand-alone sight.
Hotchkiss is a small North Fork Valley town of about 950 people on US 92, in the West Elks wine area where vineyards sit between 1,646 m and 1,951 m. Main Street is a short row of old storefronts and antiques. Almost everything worth doing is a drive away, so a car is the deciding factor. Most travellers give it one night, or use it as a base for two or three nights while working through Paonia, Crawford and Grand Mesa.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No public transport between valley towns: without a car you are stuck.
- Cell signal drops on the mesa and in the canyons; download offline maps.
- Winter snow and ice on US 133 and the Grand Mesa byway; check conditions before driving up.
- Many wineries keep short, seasonal hours: check before you drive out.
Low street crime; the real risks are long drives, deer and elk on the road at dusk, summer heat and altitude above 1,600 m. Carry water, tell someone your route, and do not count on phone signal outside town.
