Horsham
Horsham, Victoria
One night as a Western Highway stopover, or two if you climb at Mount Arapiles: the town itself is a half-day, not a destination.
Horsham is the main service town of the Wimmera, on the A8 Western Highway about four hours' drive from Melbourne and roughly three from Adelaide. Almost everyone passes through; the reason to stop longer is Mount Arapiles, 30 minutes west, one of Australia's best-known rock-climbing areas. The town has a regional art gallery, botanic gardens and a river walk, and it works well as a bed between Melbourne and the Grampians or the South Australian border.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake or 'G'day' / 'How are you going?'; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; long answers to 'how are you'
- Rounds: Buy your round ('shout') when drinking in a group; avoid: Leaving before your shout
- Queues: Queue patiently; sitting in the front seat of a taxi when alone is common; avoid: Pushing in — it is noticed
- Country: Listen to Welcomes and Acknowledgements; use local place names when offered; avoid: Touching artefacts or photographing ceremonies without permission
- Beach: Swim between the flags; respect lifesavers' instructions; avoid: Swimming at unpatrolled beaches alone
- Humour: Expect teasing and understatement; laugh along; avoid: Taking dry sarcasm literally or boasting
- Walking and driving: Keep left on footpaths and escalators; wave thanks to drivers who let you in; avoid: Stopping on the road to photograph kangaroos
Scams and watch-outs
- Summer heat: January and February regularly pass 35 °C; carry water and don't plan long walks after 11:00.
- Distances are real: the next sizeable towns are Ararat (about 1 h east) and Dimboola (about 30 min west).
- Fuel and food gaps on the highway after dark; fill up in town.
- Mount Arapiles campground water tanks are not for drinking: bring your own.
- Total fire ban days in summer can close parks and walking tracks (check Parks Victoria).
A quiet, safe country town; the real risks are heat, long empty highway drives and wildlife on the road at dawn and dusk. Standard care in the pub and motel strips at night.
