Hoover
Base in Hoover only if you have a car and want mall shopping plus a Birmingham day run: 1 night, 2 max.
Hoover is a retail-and-hotels suburb south of Birmingham, not a sightseeing town. Almost everything worth seeing sits in Birmingham, 15-25 min north by car. Come for Riverchase Galleria, a golf resort or a Hoover Met event, and treat the city as a bed base with easy interstate access.

Get around
A car is the practical answer: the city is spread along US 31, Highway 150, Lorna Road, Valleydale Road and US 280, with I-65 and I-459 crossing in the middle. Rideshare works for short hops but wait times stretch outside the Galleria area. Walking covers little beyond one shopping centre.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Handshake and 'hi, how are you?' — reply 'good, thanks'; avoid: Treating the question as a real health enquiry
- Restaurants: Tip 18–22% and wait for the check; avoid: Leaving without tipping
- Personal space: Keep an arm's length in queues; avoid: Standing close to strangers
- Politics and religion: Listen more than you speak; avoid: Opening with hot-button topics
- Smoking: Smoke only in marked areas; avoid: Smoking near doors or in parks where banned
Scams and watch-outs
- No useful public transit: without a car or rideshare budget, you are stuck.
- Summer heat and afternoon storms: plan indoor stops midday.
- Event weekends (SEC Baseball Tournament in late May, Regions Tradition in early May) fill hotels and raise rates.
- Sales tax is added at the till; the shelf price is not the total.
Suburban and generally low-risk; the real hazards are driving (interstate traffic, storms) and leaving valuables visible in a parked car.
